Exploring Pico Island: Activities and Adventures

Pico Island is an adventurer's paradise, offering activities that range from heart-pumping mountain climbs to serene ocean encounters. Whether you're seeking adrenaline or tranquillity, this remarkable island delivers.

Mount Pico, standing at 2,351 metres, is the obvious starting point. The climb to the summit typically takes 3-4 hours up and 2-3 hours down, with the trail winding through four distinct vegetation zones. At the top, the volcanic crater and the tiny summit cone of Piquinho offer truly awe-inspiring views.

The ocean around Pico is equally compelling. Whale watching excursions depart from Lajes do Pico and São Roque, offering encounters with sperm whales, blue whales, and multiple dolphin species. For a more immersive experience, swimming with dolphins is available during summer months.

Diving enthusiasts will discover underwater landscapes as dramatic as those above the surface. Volcanic arches, caves, and reefs teem with marine life, while the famous "Princess Alice Bank" offshore offers encounters with manta rays and even whale sharks.

On land, the island's network of trails explores everything from mysterious volcanic caves like Gruta das Torres — one of the longest lava tubes in the world — to the peaceful shores of natural swimming pools carved from volcanic rock.

Cultural experiences abound too. Visit the Whaling Museum in Lajes, explore traditional boat-building in São Roque, or tour the island's distinctive wine cellars. The Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best explored on foot or by bike.

At Atlantic Heritage, our personal assistant can arrange any of these activities for you, ensuring you make the most of your time on this extraordinary island.
